Comprehensive postnatal check-up in Newmarket

Half of all women experience some weakness in their pelvic floor and abdominals after pregnancy. The physical changes do not always automatically recover and in time, this has the potential to cause back pain, pelvic pain or pelvic floor symptoms.

Too often the main focus is on your baby during the early postnatal period and it’s really common for your own health issues to be the very last to be addressed. It’s never too late to take action though and whether you had your baby 6 weeks or 6 years ago, a comprehensive postnatal physiotherapy assessment is a great place to start.

Postnatal assessment and treatment is a really specialist area of physiotherapy and it’s vital to see someone with the right training, skills and experience to treat you properly. Our Women’s Health Physiotherapist, Henriette Valmestad, is a registered Mummy MOT Practitioner. This means that she is comprehensively trained, qualified and licensed to offer The Mummy MOT. The Mummy MOT is a detailed postnatal assessment including the full history of your pregnancy and delivery and also includes a screen for dysfunction of the bowel, bladder or pelvic floor. We will complete a thorough physical examination of your posture, tummy gap (diastasis recti), movement of the spine, pelvis and hips. An internal examination of your pelvic floor muscles is also offered.

Should I have a Mummy MOT?

Whether you had an uncomplicated vaginal delivery or had to have a C-section or episiotomy and assisted delivery, The Mummy MOT is recommended for all women who have given birth.

There are huge benefits to undergoing a thorough postnatal assessment, even if you don’t have symptoms relating specifically to your pelvic floor. Your body has gone through great stress during pregnancy and labour and even though this is all normal, your recovery can be significantly improved with the right hands-on treatment, advice and programme of corrective exercises.
