Specialist treatment for women in and around Newmarket

Issues related to the pelvis and pelvic floor are much more common than most of us would think. In fact, 1 in 3 women will experience symptoms at some point in their life. However, even though it’s common, that doesn’t mean it should be normal. Non-surgical physiotherapy techniques are very effective in treating and preventing symptoms for women of all ages.

Symptoms related to the pelvic floor may start at any stage of a woman’s life. Some experience symptoms in their teenage years, others after delivery of their children or when going through menopause. Many women live with their symptoms accepting this is their new ‘normal’, without realising there are a number of ways to improve the situation. There are plenty of adverts around, trying to sell you pads and incontinence pants to help you deal with the symptoms, however more people should be being told about how to deal with the root cause of their problem. In fact 80% of women with pelvic floor symptoms who seek help, can ultimately be treated.

How can women’s health physiotherapy help?

A women’s health physiotherapist has specialist training and knowledge in examining and treating issues related to the pelvis and pelvic floor. By taking a confidential and detailed history to establish what might be causing the symptoms, as well as a thorough examination to identify the issue, a diagnosis and treatment plan can often be put in place.

Every woman is different and will have different challenges. By looking at the full picture of how your day to day life is being affected, we will establish how your physical and emotional wellbeing can be improved. Our women’s health physiotherapists will make sure you feel comfortable and taken care of during the appointment. If you would prefer to have a chaperone present, we can certainly arrange this for you.

What can I expect at my first women’s health physio appointment?

Once we have gathered the full history of your symptoms, a physical examination can be completed. The pelvis is a complex structure and the examination may include assessing external parts of your body such as the lower back, abdominals and hips. Looking at movements, strength and loading tolerance are all crucial factors to fully understand your condition.

You may be offered an internal examination of your pelvic floor. This will help us to assess the function of your pelvic floor muscles including, tone, coordination and strength.

All the information collected from your assessment will further guide the treatment and management of your problem. We will make sure that you understand exactly what is going on throughout the entire process.
